2018 “was a HUGE year” for the state scholarship program, Chairman John Snyder, PER reported at last weekend’s Joint District Deputy Clinic. How huge? Well, for the first time in over 20 years that Kentucky had two national finalists and had a winner of one of the top awards (1st through 3rd Place). Only once in the last 20 years did Kentucky have one National Finalist. In 2011 Heather Knippel, who was sponsored by Henderson Lodge #206, reached the National Finals.

This year, David Ma, sponsored by Frankfort Lodge #530, was the boys National Runner-up and earned a $40,000 award. Jillian Fields, sponsored by Newport Lodge #273 was also a national finalist and won $20,000. Jade Nicely, sponsored by Florence Lodge #314 was a National Semi-Finalist as well. Kentucky students also received a total of five Legacy Scholarship Awards worth $4,000 each this year.

Our state association also awarded scholarships totaling $18,000 in 2018. One boy and one girl received a top award of $2,000 each. Seven boys and seven girls each received a $1,000 award as well.
