For the last 29 years, Ashland Elks Lodge #350 has prepared and served a Thanksgiving meal to all comers. This year, the lodge estimates it will serve 1,600 meals. According the Ashland Independent, the lodge will prepare 1,000 pounds of turkey, 600 pounds of homemade dressing, 400 pounds of mashed potatoes, 16 cases of green beans, gravy, rolls, and dessert.
Volunteers deliver the meals to shut-ins, the lodge doors are open from 11 AM to 3 PM for walk-in diners, and Elk members will even go pick up those who need a ride.
Mark Ison, who has headed up the Thanksgiving crew for all 29 years said, “It just gives you a good warm feeling to help someone that doesn’t have what you have on Thanksgiving.” Ison says that some volunteers have been there for over 20 years, and some even bring their children and grandchildren. “It shows them what Thanksgiving is all about,” he said.
There’s no doubt that in Ashland, Elks Care, Elks Share!
